Balasore Social Service Society according to the mandate operates in four districts : Mayurbhanj, Bhadrak, Keonjhar, and Balasore located in the state of Odisha, India. These areas are known for their diverse cultural heritage, tribal communities, and rich natural resources. However, they also face socio-economic challenges, including poverty, limited access to healthcare, education, and livelihood opportunities. BSSS focuses on improving the quality of life in these regions by implementing development programs that address issues like health, education, social security, and sustainable livelihoods. The organization collaborates with local communities and stakeholders to drive meaningful change and foster socio-economic empowerment.
Mayurbhanj district consists of approximately 31 blocks, of which BSSS has actively worked in at least 9. The organization focuses on key themes such as agriculture, education, child rights, and has conducted various campaigns in the past, including those related to health and hygiene, eye care, and general health camps. As a predominantly tribal region of Odisha, BSSS designs its projects to specifically target and uplift the tribal community. In Mayurbhanj, BSSS has reached approximately 3.5 lakh people, with a special emphasis on empowering tribal populations. Central to its efforts are tribal women, who actively participate in all implemented projects, reflecting the organization's commitment to their upliftment and empowerment.
Keonjhar district comprises approximately 13 blocks, and BSSS has been actively engaged in 4 of them: Champua, Keonjhar Sadar, Anandapur, and Joda, reaching a population of around 50,000. The organization implements various projects focusing on the development of tribal communities and underprivileged sections of society. These initiatives include livelihood promotion, introducing innovative agricultural techniques, and conducting education programs for young children and older women.
The organization's head office is located in Balasore district, where it has implemented numerous projects since its inception. These include small income-generating training programs for women and emergency response initiatives in collaboration with the Emergency Department. BSSS has also actively engaged with women's Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and conducted various skill development programs to benefit marginalized and underprivileged communities. Out of the district's 12 blocks, BSSS has worked in 9, reaching a total population of approximately 3 lakhs.
In Bhadrak district, which consists of 7 blocks, BSSS has actively worked in Basudevpur, Bant, Dhamnagar, Chandbali and Tihidi blocks, focusing on disaster management. Given the recurring challenges posed by floods and cyclones that devastate livelihoods, livestock, and lives each year, the organization has undertaken projects related to post-disaster recovery, livelihood promotion, and research-based initiatives. These efforts have positively impacted the lives of approximately 50,000 people, equipping them to better handle unforeseen disasters.
